Duo Viello

Launched in July of 2019 with four debut concert appearances throughout the Bay Area, Duo Viello was a reunion of violist Andrew Duckles and cellist Annie Yeh after meeting over 30 years ago in Blue Hill, Maine at the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival.

The mission of Duo Viello was to bring a rich, joyous, playful and beautiful sound combination of the viola and cello to the world with a diverse repertoire, including their own arrangements of pieces written for other duo combinations as well as the standard concert literature.

  • Canadian-born violist Andrew Duckles leads a diverse musical life as a recording artist, soloist, chamber musician and teacher. From a very tall family of musicians, Andrew is the “runt” of the Duckles family, standing at mere 6’4”. Formerly principal viola of the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet orchestras, Duckles now makes his home in Southern California and is the principal violist of the Long Beach Symphony. Duckles began his orchestral career with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and has made appearances as principal viola of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, among others. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Duckles appears regularly as a guest artist on a number of chamber music series throughout the United States and Europe, frequently sharing the stage with the Alexander String Quartet and the Los Angeles-based Debussy Trio. For over fifteen years, Mr. Duckles has been in high demand as a recording artist for multitude of studio recording projects for television and motion picture soundtracks, including Frozen 2, Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker and Mulan. Andrew is married to culinary genius, master educator, and French horn player extraordinaire Laura Strand. Together, they live in Long Beach, California with their two sons.

  • Cellist Annie Yeh grew up on the east coast in New York and Philadelphia before settling in the Bay Area. She began her music studies at age 6 on the piano, followed by the cello at age 13.

    Annie received her Masters degree in cello performance & music on a full fellowship from Ohio University. She studied with renowned teachers Debbie Reeder of the Philadelphia Trio, Mark Schroeder at Ohio University, Alan Harris at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and numerous orchestral and chamber music coaches. She served as Associate Principal Cellist of the Huntington Chamber Orchestra and ran a cello instruction studio in the Bay Area for over 10 years. Influenced by renowned Jazz cellist David Baker, In 2010, Annie released an album of jazz standards, titled "Something New” with guitarist Tony Orbasido and drummer Matthew Swindells.

    After launching UC Berkeley’s first crowdfunding platform and campus-wide student innovation incubator program, “Big Ideas @ Berkeley” with Tom Kalil, former adviser to Barack Obama for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Annie returned to her true passion - music. She continues to invite audiences with her warmth of sound and versatility as a soloist and chamber musician, having launched The Intarsia Trio and Duo Viello.

    Annie also holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., Asian Studies and Pre-Medicine)  and UC Berkeley (Masters, School of Information). When not practicing, preparing for a concert or working at the Center for IT Research in the Interest of Society at UC Berkeley, Annie practices yoga, hikes, knits, and takes care of her two cats, Pepper and Wilson.
